Lucy was feeling “off” for a while
She slept a lot, she barely smiled
She spent her time all alone
Scrolling and scrolling on her phone
She wore her sweats day in and out
And only spoke in angry shouts
One day her mom said “Let’s go for a walk
We need to have a little talk
I’m worried that you don’t eat lunch
I’m worried ‘cause you sleep a bunch
You haven’t showered since who knows when
You haven’t spent time with any friends
You stopped doing a whole list of things
It’s like you don’t care about anything
I’m concerned about your mental health
I think we need to get some help”
Lucy argued in an angry tone
“Go away!” she said. “Leave me alone!”
She shouted some more, but finally agreed
“A therapist is what I need”
Soon she was under a doctor’s care
With weekly sessions in a therapist’s chair
Little by little she began self-care
She wrote in her journal and washed her hair
As these changes were happening, it was suggested
A dog would be a good investment
The family went from place to place
And found a puppy with the cutest face
They brought Walter home and he ate Mom’s shoe
It was clear Lucy had some training to do
Lucy taught Walter to sit, lay and roll over
And together they watched Netflix under the covers
They took long walks in the woods together
Her grandma knit them matching sweaters
Soon they become the best of friends
And Lucy slowly continued to mend
It wasn’t one thing, perhaps it was three:
Walter, a doctor and talk therapy
They helped Lucy to get back on track
She’s going forward and she’s not looking back
She’s making plans for the future, for when she’s all grown
She has dream of careers and the house she will own
She dreams of vacations and walks on the beach
She dreams that nothing is out of her reach
And then one day the future nears
High school is over, graduation appears
Lucy leaves the nest, she’s off to college
To the school in the north with the pretty fall foliage
Her parents cross fingers that all will be well
And Lucy soon texts to say things are swell
She likes her classes and the cool crisp weather
She makes new friends with people who get her
Together they talk about things good and things bad
They laugh about scary experiences they had
They talk about dreams and the things that they wish
They go together and buy a new fish
Lucy names her fish Bud. He lives on her shelf
She continues to care for her pets and herself
